Saving and testing the KML file

In Google Earth, right-click on the folder on the left containing your list of points and pick Save Place As...
Ensure the Save as type is set to KML, not KMZ. The default is to save as KMZ which is not suitable

To save the KML file out from Google Earth:

  1. Right-click on the folder on the left containing your list of points and pick Save Place As...
  2. Ensure the Save as type is set to KML, not KMZ. The default is to save as KMZ which is not suitable
  3. The filename should be descriptive, but is likely to be changed by your MapRun administrator before they upload it because of the need to be globally unique and to contain the keywords needed to specify things like course type, score type and time limit

To test the points in your KML file, use CheckSites on the MapRun website. This allows you to create your own short-lived personal event. No results will be calculated. Please do not abuse this system by trying to use it to run public events.

  1. Visit the CheckSites page
  2. Enter your event name (e.g. My town test). Add PXAC at the end if you want a line course to be created, but in general for just checking the points work this is not necessary.
  3. Set a date for the CheckSites event to expire, at which point it will be removed from the MapRun system, By default, this will be in a month
  4. Enter your name and email address
  5. If you want to upload a KMZ file as a background map, pick the file - this is optional By default, CheckSites will show your location on the map (if using a phone), so this can sometimes be useful to check the accuracy of the mapping
  6. Pick the KML file you want to check (you do not need to specify a KML file if you only want to use the map-checking feature, but we want to check the KML rather than the map)
  7. Decide whether you want to see your location and track on the map as you run (if using a phone). For testing your KML file, leave this switched on as it may help you to see discrepencies between your position and the control
  8. Click on Add the Event to upload to the MapRun servers and ensure you take note of the 6-digit code you are given
  9. On your phone, open the MapRun app, open its menu and pick CheckSites. You can now enter the 6-digit code to retrieve your CheckSites event
  10. Run your course as normal to check that the start, finish and all controls in-between work as intended. It may be useful to take a pen to mark any mapping problems or discrepencies between where the control actually punched and where you intended it to
  11. You may want to make a note of any parking restrictions, etc. in the area for you to publicise
  12. When you have finished, make any map and control corrections needed and repeat using CheckSites until happy!
