Planning in OpenOrienteeringMap
OpenOrienteeringMap can be used to plan a score or line course by adding start, finish and controls to it. You can download a KML file that is suitable for importing straight into MapRun. However, there are a number of downsides to this:
- Need to remember to download base map as a KMZ before adding any controls as your KMZ file should not have any controls on it
- Cannot add control descriptions to the map (textual control descriptions can be set, but these are downloaded/printed separately as a Clue sheet)
- Number placement relative to the control circle can be set, but no other options such as colour, white surround and circle size can be set
- Out-of-Bounds (OOB) handling is very basic; just crosses on OOB paths and mandatory crossing points
- Works best with StreetO-style maps
OpenOrienteeringMap has the ability to pull in points from OpenStreetMap within the chosen mapped area to generate a course in a couple of clicks. Because it can generate the KML file too, it can be very quick to create a simple course. To import this, click on the Map Features button. Types of points that can be imported:
- Postboxes
- Blue plaques
- Benches
- Lampposts
- Permanent Orienteering Course (POC) controls (rare, but if you have a POC in your area, you can edit OpenStreetMap to add the controls)
- Custom: allows you to import any type of tagged node - very much for advanced users!
