What is a MapRun course?
Short course with 3 controls (plus Start and Finish)
From a technical point of view, a MapRun course is just a Google Earth KML file. This is simply a list of latitude/longitude points (format is XML).
- Waypoints have numeric names which are used as the control numbers (i.e. must be numeric)
- Numbers themselves are unimportant, but nice if they can be sequential on a line course (unlikely to be possible if controls shared between multiple courses in Purple Pen)
- Start at S1 (cannot be STA1)
- Finish at F1 (cannot be FIN1)
- List must start with S1 and finish with F1
- All other points are controls and, for line courses, are in the order they must be visited
- Easily checked with Google Earth, just by double-clicking on the file
What else is needed for a course?
As a planner, you should provide:
- KMZ file – a georeferenced image file. Used for route display afterwards. Also used if runners use a phone to navigate instead of a printed map, but this is not recommended
- Must be of base map only with no controls on
- Can also be viewed in Google Earth
- Optional with recent MapRun apps, but recommended
- PDF map to print. As mentioned, it is possible to use a phone and view the map on that, but this is impractical
- Course type (line, score, scatter) and, for a score course, the chosen scoring scheme
- Course name – must be globally unique and cannot be altered. Your local admin will usually take care of this as the final filename may also include information that determines the course type, scoring scheme and any PIN protection
