BKO Newbury North

Berkshire Orienteering (BKO) welcomes you to our BKO Newbury North MapRun event.

Details

Score: 60 minute score; controls 10-19 score 10 points, 20-29 20 points, 30-39 30 points, 20 point penalty for each minute (or part) late.
This is mostly an area of modern suburban housing, but there is some variety with the town centre, a corporate campus and areas of parkland.
The area is crossed by the A339 and the A4. You can run on the paths either side of the A4, but there is no pedestrian access to the A339 in the norther part of the map. Both these roads are very busy so please use the mandatory road crossings and avoid the out of bounds areas marked on the map. The crossings are either underpasses, bridges or traffic light controlled crossings.
Car speeds tend to be low on the minor roads, but may be higher on the wider roads. Please take care when crossing.
The town centre in the south-west part of the map may be busy at weekends, so take care of other pedestrians.
Towards the north of the map, you reach the edge of the town and there a couple of paths that may get a little slippery after rainfall, but the rest of the area is mostly tarmac or drier paths.
The Cock Inn is on Shaw Road, not far from the start, if you are looking for refreshments after your run.

Competitors under 16 should be accompanied by an adult. If running alone let someone else know of their plans and or travel to the area with a colleague as Covid-19 regulations allow. Consider carrying a mobile phone even if using a watch for navigation. Take care when crossing any road. Nearest A & E is the Royal Berkshire Hospital, Craven Road, Reading RG1 5AN.
Finally note that this is a solo activity and not covered by British Orienteering Event Insurance. All competitors take part at their own risk and are responsible for their own safety.

Parking

Car – Free parking on Church Road (What3Words ///bank.enhancement.aware). Please access Church Road from the south-west end, from the B4009 Shaw Road, as it is blocked for vehicles from the northern end. I would avoid parking in the school, church or Shaw House car parks.

Cycle – No bike racks but there is a gate next to the bridge where a bike could be locked.
Bus – Nearest bus stop is Coachmans Court. Jet Black 1 service beween Newbury bus station and Reading.

Rail – Newbury Railway Station is 2.4km from the start.

60 minute score

This is a Score course which means you should get as many controls as you can within 60 minutes.

There are 30 controls in total. You do not need to get them all and you can visit them in any order.

Controls score different numbers of points:
  • Controls numbered 10 to 19 score 10 points
  • Controls numbered 20 to 29 score 20 points
  • Controls numbered 30 to 39 score 30 points
For each minute or part-minute you are late back, you will lose 20 points. The highest number of points wins. The time you take is used as tie-break.
